Although I sort of hoped to spend the week in Vancouver (our connecting flight stop) to tour the University of British Columbia (due to my acceptance to the Sauder Commerce program the night before our flight), Hawaii was definitely a great next choice.
Hawaii is a lush environment, known for its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and unique biodiversity. This tropical paradise is composed of 137 islands, with the main eight islands being the most well-known: Hawaii (the Big Island), Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe.
The islands are characterized by volcanic mountains, beautiful beaches, and rich ecosystems. Today, the culture is a blend of native Hawaiian traditions and influences from various immigrant groups. This rich heritage is reflected in the islands' music, dance, art, and cuisine.

Our journey begins in Honolulu. This is the capital city of Hawaii, a vibrant urban centre located on the island of Oahu.
Strolling through Waikiki was a pleasant experience, where the golden sands met the stunning waters of the Pacific Ocean. This iconic beachfront neighbourhood is lined with palm trees, vibrant nightlife, and a variety of dining options. As you walk along the bustling promenade, the sound of waves crashing and the scent of ocean air create a soothing ambiance.
The Royal Hawaiian Center, situated in the heart of Waikiki, offers an elegant shopping experience that blends luxury with Hawaiian charm. This open-air mall features a curated selection of high-end boutiques, designer brands, and unique local shops. Visitors can indulge in upscale retail therapy while enjoying the centre's beautiful landscaping, art installations, and cultural events. With its combination of luxury shopping and a relaxed island vibe, the Royal Hawaiian Center is the perfect place to find exclusive items and experience the spirit of aloha.
Now for the more natural beauty of this beloved land.
We spent much of our time privately driving through the islands, finding astounding landmarks along the way. Quite a bit of hiking was involved.
On the Big Island, we visited the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve. This reserve is situated on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in Hawaii, and is characterized by its unique flora and fauna, as well as its cultural significance.
There are several hiking trails that range in difficulty, allowing visitors to explore the rich biodiversity of the area. Due to its elevation and low light pollution, the area is also popular for stargazing, particularly from the Mauna Kea summit. Facilities are limited, so it’s advisable to prepare accordingly, bringing water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for changing weather conditions.
It was quite chilly when we visited, as some roads were even blocked off due to icy conditions. Overall, the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve offers a unique blend of natural beauty and outdoor adventure.
On the island of Kaua'i, off the Po'ipū coast, we went on a Whale Watching Tour, seeing whales, sea turtles and other beautiful sea creatures in the wild. We were offered a unique opportunity to observe majestic marine life in their natural habitat.
The best time for whale watching in Kaua'i is typically from December to April, when humpback whales migrate to the warm Hawaiian waters. We were able to see humpback whales breaching, tail slapping, and spouting as they migrate through Hawaiian waters. In addition to whales and turtles, you might encounter dolphins, manta rays, and various fish species, making for a rich marine experience.
Our expert guides provided insights into the behaviours and habitats of the marine animals, enhancing the educational aspect of the tour. The tour also offers stunning views of the Po'ipū coastline, with its beautiful cliffs and clear blue waters. Ample opportunities for photography allow guests to capture memorable moments of the wildlife and landscapes.
Say a quick hello to this lovely turtle.
